Charon are you still alive?
For those of us who don't survive
Services needed our souls await
Fare's paid we're here by gate.

River Styx cannot navigate
Ferryman needed, tired of wait
We have received burial rites
Our souls are pure, Charon tonight!

Written for HEART-OF-POETRY:iconheart-of-poetry:[link] Prompt Myth and Legend.
poem concerned with the Greek myth of Charon the ferryman who saw cleansed souls safely across the river Styx through the underworld to their final destination. The fare was a coin placed in the mouth of departed.

I wrote a poem about Charon once. It belonged to a series of poems. Hope to share it again here sometime... :iconcharonplz:

Is this based in Greek mythos of Christian mythos(dante in particular)? i know that they both have a River Styx blocking passage into the underworld but i have never heard of Charon. I have read the Divine Comedy though and there, Phlegyas guards the River Styx.

In Greek mythology Charon is the ferryman of the dead. He only accepts those who are buried with proper rites and a coin has been paid for their passage. Those who cannot afford to pay the fee are doomed to wander the banks of the Sytx for 100 years :sun:
